In the 2016 Autumn Statement it was announced that the Government intended to extend the Right to Buy to eligible housing association tenants. The scheme would offer people currently renting with housing associations a discount on the market sale price of their home.

The first pilot for the scheme ended in October 2016 and a second, 5-year, pilot was announced during the 2016 Autumn Statement. The housing minister confirmed in November 2016 that the scheme would not be offered to those outside of the pilot until at least April 2018.
