Plans to build 28 new homes on the site of a popular sheltered housing scheme in West Molesey, have been given the go-ahead.
Crown Simmons Housing, based in Esher, has been granted planning permission to redevelop its site in Abbey Walk, West Molesey, known locally as Mole Abbey, to build much-needed affordable housing for local people.
The new scheme will comprise of 28 one and two-bedroom apartments, including eight for rent, 16 for shared ownership, four for private sale and brand new communal facilities. As part of the new development 11 of the existing 1990s apartments will be retained and the eight additional newly built one-bedroom apartments will be occupied by existing residents. The existing dated communal facilities, and 12 1960s-built, pre-fabricated bungalows will be demolished to make way for the new scheme and the building work will be phased to allow residents to remain on-site until their new homes are built.

According to the South East ‘Home Truths’ report, published by the National Housing Federation in February 2017, Elmbridge is the most expensive place in the South East to rent a home outside of London, with local people, on average spending over 60% of their income on their rent. The new development at Mole Abbey will provide desperately needed affordable housing in Elmbridge through shared ownership and social rent apartments.
Crown Simmons’ new scheme highlights the crucial role housing associations can play in tackling the UK’s housing crisis.
